The United States Embargo against Cuba is a ban on visiting and trading with Cuba. It was established on the Castro government on February 7, 1962. United states made it law in 1992 thinking it would help bring democracy to communist Cuba. People say we still have the embargo with cuba because they are a communist and because they are close friends of the Soviet Empire. The embargo is wrong and is not helping Cuba. We should stop the embargo and allow people to go visit Cuba and trade with them.
We are treating Cuba unfair. One of the main reasons why we have the embargo is because they are communist. Well, China is communist and we trade with them! We trade with Vietnam and a lot of other communist countries. We even traded with the Soviet Union back when they were our sworn enemy. It doesn’t make sense. If we can look past communism in these countries why can’t we do the same for Cuba? Doesn’t the United States believe that they are trying to help other countries in need? Why is Cuba being neglected? We may have intended to help them towards democracy, but it didn’t work. The embargo is pointless. We also say the reason of the embargo with Cuba is for our protection. We were scared in the 1960’s when Cuba was involved with the Soviet Empire. The US State Department needs to realize that there isn’t an evil Soviet Empire anymore. We are even giving aid to Russia now.
We should end the embargo with Cuba. We are interfering with the affairs of a separate country. It do not matter if we hate Castro, it’s not up to us to choose the leaders of other countries. There many other countries with far worse leaders, and we don’t have embargos against them. If Cuban-Americans really want democracy restored to Cuba, then the last thing they should want is the US deciding who can be in charge there. It is also kind of illegal. The United Nations has condemned the US embargo against Cuba. We are also missing out on a great business opportunity. Cuba is a prime market for US trade. Because we are the only country that doesn’t trade with Cuba, we are not getting money other countries that are trading with them are.
Cuba is a beautiful country with great people. We must lift the embargo and put on an extra effort to help them. The embargo against Cuba is bad. There is no good reason why the embargo should be continued. Back in the 1960’s an embargo was sensible as the Soviets were installing missiles on Cuba and America was dangerously close to getting in a war involving Cuba and the Soviet Union. But this is 2009 and Cuba is no threat to the security of the United States.
